The United Nations brings together roles across diplomacy, development, humanitarian response, law, science, technology and organizational operations. Its careers are organized through Job Networks and Job Families, with staff and affiliate entry routes that differ by role and duty station.
The UN groups related occupations into nine Job Networks. These examples use the organization’s own terminology; the official expertise page lets you select a network and explore related Job Families and roles.
Work can span economic analysis, social policy, sustainable development and programme delivery.
Technology professionals support information systems, telecommunications, digital services and secure operations.
Roles contribute to political affairs, peace operations, mediation, humanitarian coordination and related field work.
Communications, public information, multilingual conference services and related work help the organization share information and convene stakeholders.
Other networks cover legal services; scientific and technical work; and management and administration, including functions that support UN programmes and offices.
Examples across UN Job Networks and Families include political affairs officers, economists, human rights officers, information systems officers, legal officers, public information officers, interpreters, logisticians and programme management specialists. These are role examples, not a list of current vacancies.
Staff roles include Professional and higher categories, National Professional Officers and General Service and related categories. Other routes include internships, consultants and individual contractors, the Young Professionals Programme, Junior Professional Officer assignments and UN Volunteers. These routes have different eligibility rules and are not all UN staff appointments.
